Leaving what is comfortable and familiar is one of the most difficult things we as humans can do.
This is not a challenge for us to leave anything behind, but rather for us to consider what we would be willing to walk away from and why.
Dead Prez told the world that it is bigger than hip hop. If that message has a place within the mainstream, how much more does it apply to CHH?
At this point, I believe that my personal belief in the culture and the potential within it has been expressed. As much as I identify with and even feel like I “belong” within CHH, I have to ask myself one important question. Would I walk away from it? Is there anything that I would struggle to let go of if it was hindering the cause of Christ?
1 Thessalonians 2:6, “Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ.”
Philippians 3:14, “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
1 Corinthians 9:12, “If others share this rightful claim on you, do not we even more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.”
Everyone is talking about unity, it is even an element of FiveTwenty’s purpose. Are we really looking at what that means?
We have been beaten over the head with this Americanist ideal of the individual. It is a belief that “I’m can have a different opinion”, “Don’t tell me I’m wrong or you are being prejudiced towards me”, “I view the Bible differently so I’m going to separate myself from you” that causes friction and division. Being an individual is indeed important. It also does not have a place in every element of life. Do we believe that Jesus came to organize different denominations of believers or did he come to establish one Body? The enemy wants to see us divided among ourselves, and it is no different in Christian Hip Hop.
CHH is a limb of the Body that is meant to carry out the purpose of the Son and ultimately the Father. If we are all doing our own thing, does that limb work properly? If we cannot find a way to serve that purpose, do we have a reason to keep treading water or is it better than the limb is cut off?
There should not be an amount of clout, a number of followers, or a platform of any size that can convince us that what we have going on would be a tragedy to lose. As the apostle Paul said to the believers at Corinth:
“For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.”
Let God use us how He sees fit rather than gain popularity or influence in any other way.
Are we willing to walk away from it all in order to give glory to Jesus Christ? I believe that should be the primary factor when we are making our decisions. Is building that social media following worth deleting if we have to? Is giving away features and promotions even if we really need the money an option if it means someone will be impacted by the Gospel? Is it worth the feeling of no longer knowing who we are, but knowing who He is?
It is tough and our flesh screams for us to stay put because, for the most part, we can anticipate what may or may not happen. But if we are pursuing Christ, that is not the life we have been promised.
Can we take a walk if we need to?
