This song is for the person who needs to let go of someone, but can’t.
Isaac Mather and Justin Binnicker contemplate their inability to rid themselves of those who hurt them. Both have struggled with letting toxic people influence and define how they see themselves. In creating this song, both artists hope to reach and impact others with this struggle, as well as find freedom personally from the trauma that relationships have caused them. Isaac and Justin have been working on this song for over a year. During that time they have continued to grow in their own friendship. This song was and is an outlet they both have used to relate with each other. Isaac used his production and engineering expertise to steer the project in the right direction, ultimately making this song something both artists are proud of.
Authentic, contemplative, and questioning. On My Own is a representation of Justin and Xay’s pursuits of God and why at many times they try to do things by themselves. In spaces where nothing is going right, they believed that they had been left to do it alone.
The chorus declares, “Why do I tell myself I’m alone? / When the king of all the universe is on the throne”. This understanding is freeing, but also challenging, realizing that they can’t do it alone. It is hard continually getting distracted by the world, religion, people, and deception. It’s easy to question where God was, yet still, know that he stands on the throne.
Pain is a song about going through trauma, pain, and issues that you can’t control. This sense of helplessness creates bitterness, anger, and hopelessness which are all feelings contemplated throughout the record. It is hard when people get over their issues and assume that you should too.
Right By My Side is a declaration of God’s unconditional love. Even when we may not understand it. With a pop/hip-hop style, the track brings the listener into a state of happiness throughout. Even in the midst of our mess, even though we’re broken, He remains Right By My Side.
