Review: iNTELLECT, ‘Polished Arrows’

By King David tha Vessel @Yieldedman | June 13, 2020

Truth be told, you don’t have to be the best rapper or best singer in order to be a great artist

Artistry deals more with an understanding of intent and purpose, garnishing a command of what you’re good at and growing in that space.

With the release of Polished Arrows, iNTELLECT shows that he gets what he’s good at and why he’s good at it.

The Ohio emcee, fresh off his collaborative push as one half of Above the CloudsThe Righteous’offering (along with beatmaker Tae Lamar), fires away with his proven formula of throwback production and relevant content on Arrows.

The first track Blast Off, featuring Philip Anthony, takes the listener in right away with its splendid mix of chopped-sampled production and on-point lyrical execution. Arrows follows the strong lead record with the album’s title track, also featuring the lively rhymes of Philip Anthony. First Things First joins the title track with their chant heavy hooks and sweet, East Coast seasoned, head-nodding musical canvases.

iNTELLECT is committed to his identity as an artist, which causes Arrows to lull a bit as that aforementioned winning formula doesn’t deviate much at all.

The project wakes back up, though, on Back Again, a smoothly sampled track featuring the delicate vocals of DaLomonze. Philip Anthony makes a third appearance on The Remedy, another noteworthy track on the album.

The mixing and mastering on the project are better than serviceable, and aside from the Anthony guest spots, the other features on the album are all well-placed and strongly utilized.

The most important piece of Polished Arrows is iNTELLECT’s confidence in and intentional promotion of the WORD of GOD and the Truth it endorses.

He leaves nothing to the imagination at a time when so many other CHH artists come across as unsure and undedicated to keeping The Cross at the forefront of their artistry. Polished Arrows does not disappoint: it is a vintage release in a current age with a soundscape that makes its message easy to digest.
