Hnst Talk: Nerva

“It’s deeper than rap”

Speaking with Nerva, who has burst into 2019 with a slew of singles and no signs of stopping, you quickly find that he is one artist who fully means those words.

“I’ve noticed this generation is caught up on followers when faith is most important. What’s the point of having many connections if we’re only connecting them to a destination called Hell. [I] wanna point to the Word”

So far this year Nerva has released “Full Armor”, “Rewind”, “Free Indeed”, “Elevate”, and “Over and Over” that all point to that ultimate goal.

“Music is just a platform to win souls. Death and life lie in the power of the tongue. When we hear words through the art form of music, it shouldn’t be taken lightly. Lord willing, I’ll do music all my life but I know I’m not called to save a genre or be the best rapper, but to preach the message of repentance among the nations.”

Not only is he carrying out that commission in his music, but in other areas of his life as well. He is currently going to school for training that will impact the lives of others.

“I’m in my second year tackling the basics of my program in practices with individuals (via veteran affairs hospitals or schools) and families. I’m drawn towards both studies with similar passions, however, I know what it’s like personally to strive to emerge out of a broken home environment and school system without the Word of God. I’m driven towards social work. It’s not about the cash, but the people I can touch. That’s real currency to me.”

“It start’s as children. I’ve always believed Proverbs 22:6, Train up a child in the way he should go and, when he is old, he will not depart from it. Now with all the infiltration and misguidance in school, I see where the falling down of homes begin. Division of truth and lies. It is scary how much this generation has watered down and devalued the Truth. It makes evil look good and lies feel comfortable to the ears.”

As we continued to talk, Nerva began to lay out how this same concern creeps into every area of life. Even environments such as CHH that you would expect to be spreading the Truth.

“I know oftentimes media will compromise truth if it means more rates and money. Without discernment from the Lord of lords, anyone can fall for the rubbish lies and trickery certain platforms spew out causing them to be led astray. It’s vital to make the Word of the Most High our first and last source of news (Matthew 6:33)*. I believe our creator see everything and I’m certain His hands are ready to move on the behalf of His righteous ones.”

“Our creator is so gracious and merciful, His gifts are irrevocable. What’s sad is how many squander them for purposes opposite of His will which is the only thing that abides. I’m guilty of this…so I know how patient our Father is. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of Yah. No one is righteous, not even one. We are only made righteous by fain in Christ. I believe we only please the Most High in faith, worshipping Him in Spirit and in Truth. Before we pray for his benefits we need to be praying for lack of belief. If there were more true believers, there would be less excuses for why we water down the Word of God through our platforms. This all reminds me of Ezekiel 33:1-9.”

The first time I heard of Nerva was on an episode of Trackstarz’ Line 4 Line Showdown.

I remember being very impressed by the clip. With my position within CHH, I thought I had a feel for the artists I should be keeping an eye on, but I never followed up on Nerva for some reason. It wasn’t until we launched FiveTwenty Collective that Nerva re-emerged in my world. It quickly hit me (his performance on L4L) and I wanted to know the impact his inclusion in one of the culture’s premiere staples had on him as an artist.

“I saw it as a blessing, a great opportunity to gain exposure. However, I was too excited. I mean that in literal form. I was younger and less mature then. Now I can see how easy it is to be more consumed with wanting exposure as a rapper than exalting Yeshua. I saw myself falling into idol worship…that idol was recognition for self. At that moment it was either I humble myself or be humbled by Yah. Getting validation from big names felt better than the Most High’s approval and that was dangerous. It was a great opportunity for me to learn that even if I won every L4L, accumulated the most awards on earth, gained more and more followers, it won’t compare to a true relationship with our King. My life is nothing but a vapor, I’m just passing through, born naked and leaving naked. I really want my greatest accomplishment to be winning lost souls.”

In addition to the aforementioned singles, Nerva also recently released a track titled “Dear Wife” dedicated to his significant other. I have it on good authority that he is not planning on slowing down any time soon.

So what is in store for one of the year’s hardest workers to this point?

“I can make plans, but I know only the plans of the Most High prevail. I’m just tryna be faithful and serve how I’m called to. If I’m being led by emotions I won’t go very far. But I know as a believer of Christ, who is one with the Father, it is the Spirit which bears witness to the Truth and they are all one. So, if I’m being led by the Spirit of the Most High, then I know my journey will align with the Father’s will. That being said, look out for more music, more visuals. Keep praying that my heart remains clean and true to the call when nobody is watching. That I stand firm and bold in the Lord. I’m a man and I’m not exempt from falling, similar to the greatest characters from the good book. Keep lifting me in prayer where, even when I fall, I know where to fall to get back up.”

“There is one message I want to get out there to anyone reading this, But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all of these things shall be added unto you – Matthew 6:33*. Before Christ died He commanded us in Matthew 28:19 to go and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. If I’m thinking locally, or even within the United States, I’m thinking too small because I feel like I’m destined to spread the Truth internationally. I could serve in a church building, as a youth pastor, or volunteer usher or whatever. But I truly believe my body is a vessel to be considered as a true church that can take the gospel places a building made of cement cannot go. I feel led to travel internationally as a servant of Christ’s shining light.”

The biggest thing that I was able to take away from my conversation, and that I hope connects with you and the whole of CHH, is this…

…it’s urgent to get this Truth out!
